Guide for Faculty and Staff

In the event of an emergency as described below, information affecting the general campus community will be distributed via voicemail, email, the UNC Charlotte homepage, Building Facility Marshals, and through Police and Public Safety (PPS) officers.

The Chancellor, Provost or Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs, and/or their designee, may distribute specific instructions to Deans, Associate Provosts, and Associate Vice Chancellors via email, phone, or text messages. These instructions will outline specific roles and responsibilities for faculty and staff. Faculty and staff should know their own department's emergency communication plan and whether or not activation of their business unit Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) will be necessary. Faculty and staff should also become familiar with their Building Facility Marshals and building evacuation plans.

Shelter-In-Place

This situation involves an emergency where it is important to minimize exposure to outside risks for what may be an indefinite period of time. Shelter-In-Place is signaled by repetitive intermittent tones from the campus siren followed by an audible message. Building Facility Marshals will alert occupants of their buildings of the need to stay inside. Emergency emails, text messages, campus displays (i.e. plasma screens and computer monitors) and voicemails will be used to relay the same message. Building Evacuation

Evacuations are signaled by the interior building fire alarm system. This situation involves an emergency that requires all occupants to immediately leave the building via the nearest exit and proceed to the designated assembly areas. Other methods for notification include UNC Charlotte alerts (i.e. text, email, and voicemail) which will indicate the type of emergency and if an event involves Shelter-In-Place procedures or Building Evacuation.
