Guide for Students

In the event of an emergency, students must be familiar with two common practices that they may be asked to perform: Shelter-In-Place and Building Evacuation. Information on those two practices can be found here. Please read the brief presentation of individual preparedness precautions. The information below should be read carefully since specific steps can protect your safety and security.

Individual Preparation

Students can take these simple steps to promote safety for all members of the campus community:

  • In the event of a need to Shelter-In-Place for an extended period of time, students are encouraged to have access to items that are essential to their health and comfort. Keep certain items with you when you visit campus or leave your residence hall for class such as medicines, glassess or contact lenses, and important phone numbers.
  • Ensure that you sign-up for UNC Charlotte Alerts, the University's emergency notification system. Follow the link for an easy one-step process and additional information about UNC Charlotte Alerts to receive emergency notifications.
  • Carry your UNC Charlotte 49er Card with you at all times.
  • Be aware of your environment and report suspicious activities such as unattended packages or suspicious behavior to UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety (PPS) at 704-687-2200.
  • Memorize the emergency number for PPS (704-687-2200 or ext. 7-2200) or program it into your cell phone. Feel free to call the PPS Telecommunications Center at any time for any emergency when on campus, including fire or medical emergencies, and they can connect you to the necessry University or Charlotte-Mecklenburg emergency response departments. Click here for more information about PPS safety programs.
  • Review the building evacuation routes for your residence hall, academic, and administrative buildings. The routes are posted in all common areas, building entrances, and near elevators. In addition, learn the primary assembly area for your residence hall and academic buildings. If you have any questions regarding these locations, please refer them to your RA, student counselor, or classroom professor. Students with diabilities should follow this link for building evacuation plans for students with disabilities.
  • If you live off campus or in an apartment, you should consult the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety www.readync.org

Students should continue to review information provided by the Department of Risk Management, Safety and Security (RMSS) through PPS and the Office of Business Continuity Planning (BCP) for everyday safety tips and emergency precautions undertaken by the University to better protect student safety.
